Arterial Ulcerations
Arterial Ulcers, also referred to as ischemic ulcers, are painful injuries in your skin caused by poor circulation. When the skin and underlying tissue are deprived of oxygen-rich blood, the tissue starts to die off and form an open wound. These ulcers typically occur in the lower extremities causing wounds on the toes, the heels, outer ankle or where there is pressure from walking or from footwear.
Alterial ulcers have a distinct “punched out” appearance and are typically circular with red, yellow, or black coloration. Often, the limb will feel cool or cold to the touch.
These ulcers are generally very painful. A common source of temporary relief from this pain is dangling the affected legs over the edge of bed, allowing gravity to aid blood flow to the ulcerous region.
